¨Lower Salthill Underfoot ¨ by Elena Santos
“Lower Salthill Underfoot” Screen print, edition of 15, signed and numbered by the artist Elena Santos, 2016.
This artwork is a very special piece for Elena. She created this screen print to depict Galway for a group exhibition as member of the former Galway Print Studio.
In August 2016, Galway Print Studio was selected to represent Ireland at Euro Celtic Art 2016, part of the 46th Festival Interceltique de Lorient in Brittany. The exhibition Imagining Galway celebrated the status of Galway as a place of creativity and featured the work of 13 artists, including this beautiful piece of Elena Santos.
This piece was created from an imprint of a manhole cover that she took by rubbing in-situ and used it for the dark tone. She produced the turquoise layer with a free hand drawing stencil, and pulled together this fantastic piece to highlight the value of the civic heritage in Galway. You can perfectly spot the name of the foundry in the print. This piece is part of an ongoing series of Underfoot prints that Elena is currently working on. The title is given by the location of the manhole she worked from. It is situated on a crosswalk in Lower Salthill.
Imagining Galway was brought back to Galway and exhibited in the Arts Corridor of University Hospital Galway in February 2017 thanks to Galway University Hospitals Arts Trust and Arts Director, Margaret Flannery. Read full article here
